First published on August 5, 2025 ,  updated on September 19, 2025

The Margin Forecast chart is designed to give you a clear, comprehensive view of where your business is earning or losing money. This tool allows you to analyze historical performance and future forecasts, helping you identify key areas for optimization.

This chart was developed with customer feedback to ensure it meets the needs of monthly margin reporting and forecasting. It is located in the 'Charts' section.

Key Features

The Margin Forecast Chart offers a dynamic way to explore your financial data. At a glance, you can:

  • Visualize your revenue, costs, and margin on a month-by-month basis.

  • Navigate easily through different months.

  • Analyze margins from multiple angles, including by company/department, revenue type, customer, or project.

  • Enable a cumulative view to see how amounts total up over a specific period.

Understanding the Data

The chart combines both actual, realized figures and future forecasts to give you a complete picture.

Revenue Data

  • Actual Revenue: This shows the realized revenue from financial transactions linked to ledger accounts marked as ‘Revenue’. This information is consistent with the 'Revenue Forecast' chart.

  • Forecast Revenue: For current and future months, this shows unrealized revenue from your planned and unplanned order book. The ‘Pipeline’ section is not included in this calculation.

Cost Data

  • Actual Costs: These are the realized costs taken from financial transactions. The specific transactions are determined by the configuration in the revenue type settings for processing costs.

  • Forecast Costs: For future months, costs are forecasted based on the following components:

    • Hours in draft (multiplied by the employee's cost rate).

    • Planned hours (multiplied by the employee's cost rate).

    • Hours yet to be planned (allocated hours minus planned hours, multiplied by the employee's cost rate).

    • Hours yet to be allocated (calculated hours minus allocated hours, multiplied by the cost rate on the calculation line).

Filtering and customizing your view

You can refine the data shown in the chart using several dimensions and filters:

The chart has the following grouping. Selecting one of these groupings defines the content of the chart. The groupings are:

  1. Revenue types

  2. Companies/Departments

  3. Customers

  4. Projects

You can filter the chart on:

  • Revenue types

  • Company/Department: This filter is not available when the data is already grouped by Company/Department.

  • Customer: This filter is not available when the data is grouped by Company.

  • Project labels.

Sorting options

To help analyze the data, you can sort the chart information in multiple ways:

  • Highest/Lowest margin %

  • Highest/Lowest revenue

  • Highest/Lowest costs

  • Name

Use the cumulative view

For a long-term perspective, you can toggle the cumulative (CUM) view.

  • Specify a starting year and month.

  • Once activated, all amounts will be totaled from that starting month onward.

  • You will not be able to navigate to a month before the specified start date in this view.

We hope this chart gives you the financial clarity you need to steer your business to success!
